I want to make a paint like app that can erase a section of a drawn image, any ideas on how ?

I needed to actually turn the pixels transparent and not just draw white on top of them. I thought I could do this with blend modes but I've just managed to only _keep_ the section I try to erase, instead of only _removing_ the section I'm trying to erase.
The reverse I have not been able to make work since I still don't fully get blend modes. Any ideas?
