how to exclude file from export?

Is there a way to exlude a file from the export? i do not want to remove it completely from my project as then i will forget about it's existence (and i may use it later, now it's excluded from execution) but it has only unused content (as of now), so i'd prefer not to include it in the export.
i've ticked the 'Don't package' in the file properties in the IDE, as it sounded like it might do this, but it's something different.
