Idiotic question regarding Movieclip

I'm using movieclip. The problem I am finding is that if I try and call the playing of the animation within a function it does not trigger. Yet if I start the animation outside of a function then it runs no problem.
Basically what I want to do is when I click a spot on screen gtween kicks in to do the physical movement and I want the set up movie clip to trigger at that point.
Any ideas? Apart from having too much on my mind.
