Australian ABN for Tax in App Store

Hi,

If you are in Australia. do you really need to submit an ABN to Apple for Tax in the ITunes / Appstore ?
This would be for paid apps.

Its just you dont need to pay tax for a hobby up to around 50K (this was sometime ago i looked this up)

Yeah Apple require you to have an ABN and also you have to be registered for GST on top of that

There is a difference between ATO and Apple requirements, what you have read maybe correct and based on ATO requirements, however even if you make a dollar sale on the Apple Store (and you will ONLY get paid when you accumulate a certain threshold amount) you are required to have an ABN and be registered for GST. This is quite irritating (for various reasons while registering and later) but that is how Apple roll. If you were not a Sole Trader, they would have asked for a Brad and Dunns Number, an ACN, etc

It is a bit of a pain but getting an ABN is fairly straight forward

Just register as a sole trader. I got mine within 5 minutes after filling in the online form. Others I know it has taken a few days to get it. I haven't but I believe you can register for GST right after applying for the ABN as well.

Thank you all, ill get the ABN. The first time you put an app through apple is an experience, with creating a developer account, certificates, contracts, and now tax lol

(i created one years ago when i was selling Xbox games online, i checked but its cancelled back in 2009)
