  That is a cool effect, but not what I am looking for. The effect I am looking for is a "fog of war" effect where the map permanently uncovers as the player moves around. Is this possible?

  hmm possibly you could overlay a lot of small black images and remove them individually as you go?

  Interesting avo. That might work except it seems kind of overkill for the size of area I need to cover. Besides, I need a circular hole (like a torch light), like the example evs mentioned. The easiest way I have accomplished this in the past was to draw directly onto a black image/texture.
  
  From what I am gathering, it doesn't sound like Gideros supports this.

  @ondesic most probably I would put a screen size quad on top of your scene with multiplicative blending (Sprite:setBlendMode(Sprite.MULTIPLY))
