I've noticed that any Gideros app will use about 25% of my ipod5's CPU (as measured with the Xcode debug tab), even an empty project. Is this normal, and if not are there any tricks to reduce processor usage? I'm thinking along the lines of reducing the frame rate at certain times, as part of my app is just playing sounds while the user is occupied with activities away from the screen.

You could try to cap the fps of Gideros to 30. It wont render as smoothly as 60 fps thought
