i don't know that, but there are many options, try them and choose what you like.
i just read an article on amazon where they also recommend bfxr for sound effects, plus audacity to fine tune and for music for beginners of course using free music from the net.

1. did you try tnt particles engine? i don't know if it works with the latest gideros, but in theory that's a capable choice for particles in gideros.
searching the forum gives other options, a simple one:
2. http://giderosmobile.com/forum/discussion/397/simple-particle-engine/p1
3. particle candy, not free but neither expensive and looks capable too: http://www.x-pressive.com/ParticleCandy_Corona/download.html

As far as I know there is no editor for particle candy, nor for tnt particle engine (yet).
