So we're all agreed then, if you want to develop for IOS then pay your $99 (per year?) for an Apple developer account and if you don't own a mac then pay a small fee to use a service (like MacinCloud which costs only $8 for a daily pass). It's not rocket science. Remember it's not $107 per app, it's $99 for developer account then up to (to use ISP terminology) $8 per app. If you can knock up a few apps in a week then you could probably build them all in the 1 day so your overheads have come right down.
This seems to me to be a very reasonable price to pay. You could use this service to release / update up to 40 apps for the price of a second hand mac mini off ebay. If you haven't got 40 apps in you then you would be wasting your time even thinking of buying a mac just to develop apps.
Exactly - however IF you are in the market to buy a new PC, then I would seriously recommend a Mac Mini (Late 2009 model onwards), I've got one and it works like a charm and it runs Windows 7 Home Premium as sweet as anything, so now I've got the best of both worlds. Plus it's a tidy bit of kit, takes up NO room, uses less power and is a lot more powerful than my old mini tower beast.
Obviously it goes without saying if you've got the money then IMHO the 27" iMac should be your first choice!
Love 'em or hate 'em Apple make some seriously stylish and quality kit and for the convenience factor alone of having both OS's in a single box it'll be a long time before I buy another non-Apple machine for my own use.

To the best of my knowledge (I haven't read the article so... but) since about iOS 4 Apple have stopped allowing app submission to take place via the itunes connect website, all apps HAVE to be submitted via the Application Loader app (which I think is part of XCode).
EDIT : After reading the article, that only allows you to use the PhoneGap system to sign your app with an ad-hoc certificate for use with beta testers via testflight - App submission requires access to a Mac, so you'll just have to suck it up and go Mac - sorry!

I was under the impression that Application Loader would know the difference and not work on a Hackintosh - however getting a proper working Lion Hackintosh is not easy (and good luck with Mountain Lion).
I had Leopard running perfectly on my HP-Mini, but Snow Leopard had issues with WiFi / Return from Sleep etc.
The only 100% compatible Mac clone is a real Mac - just do it!
It makes me laugh that so many people WANT OSX, but just don't want to pay what's required to get it - this goes back to that whole barrier to entry thing, if your not prepared to make the effort to do the job right and do / pay what's needed, you'll never actually do the job right (if even at all).
There's a reason that there's so many more s*** apps on the Android app store than on the Apple one (Just my humble opinion) - granted there's a LOT of crap on the Apple App Store, but there just seems to be MORE on the Android one! (or less good ones at least)

I can help you with this. we may be able to arrange a barter between us, I need a couple of modules writing in Gideros, and in return we can publish your apps through the app store. We are not a company, just individuals that right games as a hobby. Let me know.

@Cyberience - dude, seriously read this thread again, then go read about "Joustin Beaver", then consider why the barrier to entry need's to be there. Remember when YOU submit an app to the store then as far as the worlds' concerned - it's YOUR app and like anything posted on the internet, it could follow you forever!

but in the appstore there is a way to say who holds the copyright, support website so might be this type of activity is legal and safe for the developer(in this case publisher) otherwise there is no need of both of them although i had not done any research on this.
but still it will be much good if we stay away from this.
There is a python script that comes bundled with Marmalade allowing an iOS app to be signed on the Windows PC. Maybe it is worth having a look at that.
I have a Mac Pro that I use 100% on BootCamp (as a PC). I'm so lazy that I installed OSX on VirtualBox to send to Apple 'cause I can't be bothered to reboot.
In short, you don't need a Mac - just use VirtualBox and install OSX.
