Copyrighted fonts, like any software, have to have a licence to be used. Usage of copyrighted fonts, however, are harder to police than audio, photos and video for example. If you decide to use a copyrighted font without a license you're likely to get away with it.
The way I look at it is, if the font is good, why not pay for it? I'm a bit of a typography nerd, and I respect the art and the time that goes into each typeface.
There are also many free libraries out there, one of the best ones is Google. They have expanded their library a lot over the years, and worth checking out: https://fonts.google.com/
